City Shifts to Supportive Code Enforcement

April 12, 2026
Huntsville’s Community Development Department is moving away from issuing citations for minor property code violations, especially in older neighborhoods with aging housing stock. Mayor Tommy Battle referenced seniors living in homes needing repairs—siding, roofing, accessibility updates—as the catalyst for this softer, more collaborative approach. The new model emphasizes assistance over penalties. While details of funding or contractor partnerships haven’t been released, this policy shift could mean more grant-based rehab programs. We’re checking with the Housing Authority to see if federal HOME funds are being redirected to support it.
